The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Cadet First Class Stephen Joseph Pitotti, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Boulder, Colorado, on 26 January 1975. On that date, Cadet Pitotti came upon a serious automobile accident shortly after its occurrence. While tending to the wounds of the accident victims, he noticed that the fuel tank of one of the overturned vehicles was wet and the odor of gas fumes was very strong. The ignition of this car was still on, so Cadet Pitotti climbed up a mounted roof rack, pulled the door open, and dropped inside to turn it off. He was fully aware that the vehicle might explode, yet he chose to consider the safety of others above his own wellbeing. Cadet Pitotti voluntarily exposed himself to these dangerous conditions and risked his own life to insure the safety of the injured motorists. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Cadet Pitotti has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
