The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to First Lieutenant Wendell Jerrel Harkleroad, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life near Amado, Arizona, and Magdalena, Somers, Mexico, on 20 December 1967. On that date, First Lieutenant Harkleroad piloted a UH-1F helicopter rescue mission to two flooded disaster areas in order to rescue and evacuate victims trapped by the raging flood waters. With complete disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Harkleroad and his crew landed on a roof top surrounded by trees, power lines, and a television antenna to rescue a family of six. Repeatedly returning to the disaster area, First Lieutenant Harkleroad persisted in his humanitarian efforts until thirty-seven people were rescued and evacuated to safety. By his courageous actions and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, First Lieutenant Harkleroad has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
