The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain John Edward Murray, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at DaNang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, on 19 July 1969. On that date, Captain Murray, as Co-pilot, assisted his Aircraft Commander in flying their HH-43B helicopter to the area where an aircraft had crashed upon landing. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Murray assisted in hovering the helicopter so as to blow the fire away from the cockpit area, despite the hazard of exploding fuel cells and the limited time before the aircraft’s ordnance could be expected to explode. This allowed the helicopter crew to succeed in assisting the injured pilot out of the burning aircraft and to a place of safety. By his courageous actions and humanitarian regard for his fellow man, Captain Murray has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
