(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Captain Derry Allan Adamson, United States Air Force, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States in the Republic of Vietnam in 1968 and 1969. When a fighter airplane overshot the runway at an air base near Pleiku, Captain Adamson and several crewmen rushed to the damaged plane, but the members of the crew vanished when they fell into tunnels that the Viet Cong had dug at the edge of the air base. Captain Adamson continued on alone, climbed atop the fuselage, and lifted the unconscious plot out of the cockpit, mindful all the while that the pilot’s ejection mechanism might go off at any moment. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Captain Adamson reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
