The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Sergeant Ricky D. Knutson, United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life while at Travis Air Force Base, California, on 14 June 1972. On that date, Sergeant Knutson rushed to the scene of a burning automobile accident near Vacaville, California. With complete disregard for his own safety and despite the hazard of burning fuel and possible explosion of the gasoline tank, Sergeant Knutson broke the glass of one window and pulled a young girl to safety. By his courageous action and humanitarian regard for his fellowman, Sergeant Knutson has reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Air Force.
