The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Major James Coey, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 6 February 1865, while serving with 147th New York Infantry, in action at Hatcher’s Run, Virginia. Major Coey seized the regimental colors at a critical moment and by a prompt advance on the enemy caused the entire brigade to follow him; and, after being himself severely wounded, he caused himself to be lifted into the saddle and a second time rallied the line in an attempt to check the enemy.
