The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Airman’s Medal to Airman First Class Chevalier R. Harris, United States Air Force, for heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy of the United States while serving with the 56th Security Police Squadron, Nakhon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, on 10 December 1974, at Kakhon Phanom City, Thailand. Airman First Class Harris’ patrol was alerted that there was a hotel fire and an American serviceman was trapped in it. Responding to the call for help, Airman Harris’ patrol went to the scene of the fire which was in a room on the third floor of the hotel. The door to the room was closed and the Thais’ attempts to open the door were unsuccessful. His patrol forced the door open several times, but after each time, the door would slam shut because of the pressure in the room form the heat and smoke. The patrol was finally able to keep the door open by using a chair as a brace. Airman Harris then made a couple of tries to enter the room, but each time the heat and flames drove him back. Finally, he crawled int o the room and discovered a man lying on the floor, unconscious, and dragged him out. After pulling the man to safety and seeing that he was treated by the medical corpsman who accompanied the patrol Airman Harris went back into the room to insure no one else had been trapped in the room. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman First Class Harris reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
