The President of the United States of America, authorized by Executive Order 11046, 24 August 1962, takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Specialist Kevin J. Norred, United States Army, for heroism on 20 December 1989 while serving as M203 Gunner with the 3d Squad, 3d Platoon, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, during Operation JUST CAUSE in the Republic of Panama. When a Panamanian Defense Force vehicle broke through his company’s formation and began firing automatic and semi-automatic weapons, it cut off his platoon from the lead platoon and endangered the trailing platoon. Without regard for his own safety, Specialist Norred stood upright in the middle of the road and fired his grenade launcher twice at the vehicle. This heroic action disabled the vehicle and precluded it from dispersing his entire company. Specialist Kevin J. Norred’s heroic performance of duty reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
