First Lieutenant (Cavalry) James Defrees Mann, United States Army, Troop K, 7th Cavalry Regiment, was cited posthumously for gallantry in action against hostile Sioux Indians, near the Catholic Mission, on White Clay Creek, South Dakota, on 29 December 1890, where he was mortally wounded.
