    (Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Armor) David Thornton Maddux, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Maddux distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Troop A, 1st Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 23d Infantry Division (Americal), in action against the enemy at on 9 August 1970, in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam. On that date, four of Captain Maddux’s soldiers attempted to cross a minefield near Hawk Hill, Vietnam, and were wounded. In order not to endanger the lives of others of his soldiers, Captain Maddux, without thought for his own personal safety, volunteered to personal undertake the evacuation of the wounded. While engaged in his valiant effort, Captain Maddux activated another concealed mine and was killed in action. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Maddux, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
