The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Michael Edward Benefield, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. First Lieutenant Benefield distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 13 July 1969, while serving as Forward Observer with Company B, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). In Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. When a patrol was engaged by a large enemy force entrenched in bunkers, the patrol became disorganized. First Lieutenant Benefield attempted to establish radio contact with the patrol but his attempts proved unsuccessful. Realizing the patrol’s need for leadership, he left the safety of his covered position and moved through intense hostile fire to the contact area. He then directed his men to the most advantageous positions and was successful in organizing the withdrawal of the patrol. Although wounded, he remained at the contact site to direct tube and aerial rocket artillery which silenced the enemy. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
