First Lieutenant Swinney distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as 2d Platoon Leader in Troop C, 3d Squadron, 12th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy near Cu Chi, Republic of Vietnam, on 24 October 1969. On that date, Company A, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment was inserted into a regimental basecamp and was ambushed in the Iron Triangle northwest of Cu Chi. First Lieutenant Swinney’s platoon maneuvered through an old Arc Light strike area, fighting against a numerically superior enemy force to reinforce and relieve the embattled infantry company. Despite suffering 2 men killed in action and 6 wounded in action, including First Lieutenant Swinney, he reached the outnumbered infantry company. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Swinney, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
