The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) James Milton Weller, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Weller distinguished himself by heroic actions on 2 May 1969, while serving as a Platoon Leader with A Troop, 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance operation, elements of A Troop came in contact with a large enemy force. During the initial engagement, the dismounted riflemen, who were moving ahead of the main body of the troop, were pinned down by a hail of fire and several casualties were sustained. Immediately, Captain Weller organized his men and directed their fire on the hostile positions. With complete disregard for his own safety, Captain Weller maneuvered his armored vehicles on line in an assault on the enemy positions. Although the aggressors concentrated their fire on his armored personnel carrier, Captain Weller continued to move forward, placing accurate suppressive fire on the well-fortified enemy emplacements. After the riflemen had withdrawn to a safe area, Captain Weller regrouped his men, evacuated the wounded soldiers, and then continued his assault on the enemy stronghold. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Captain Weller’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
