The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Reginald Graham Moore, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry In action in the Republic of Vietnam on 20 March 1970. Captain Moore distinguished himself while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion (Airmobile), 506th Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile), in defense of Fire Support Base GRANITE, Republic of Vietnam. While checking the perimeter of the fire base, Captain Moore observed an enemy sapper crawling toward one of the defensive firing positions. He successfully engaged the insurgent with rifle fire and forced the enemy to initiate its planned assault prematurely. Despite intense hostile small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade fire, Captain Moore moved from position to position directing the defense of the perimeter. He maneuvered two platoons to high ground behind a mortar position to enable them to regroup. After organizing his men, Captain Moore provided for medical evacuation of the wounded and adjusted artillery fire on suspected enemy positions. While leading his men on a maneuver to retake the original fighting positions, Captain Moore was wounded by enemy fire. Despite his wound, he continued to lead the counterattack and repulsed the enemy force. Captain Moore’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
