The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) John Wilson Marshall, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Second Lieutenant Marshall distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Platoon Leader in an Infantry Company of the 2d Battalion, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in 1967. Second Lieutenant Marshall distinguished himself while leading his platoon to a cleared area for the wounded’s evacuation. His platoon was ambushed by enemy automatic weapons fire and was forced to withdraw, leaving behind two wounded members of his platoon. In an effort to rescue the two men, First Lieutenant Marshall led three unsuccessful assaults upon the enemy-held position. Airstrikes were then called in, and with total disregard for his own safety, First Lieutenant Marshall exposed himself to the enemy’s fire to direct the successful airstrikes. He then directed another assault, met the enemy’s resistance, and overran the fortified position and recovered his wounded men. First Lieutenant Marshall’s unreproachable courage, stamina, and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflected great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
