The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Emery Folsom Hill, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Hill distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Battery Commander of Battery B, 4th Battalion, 42d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 March 1969. On that date, Captain HillÕs battery came under almost constant recoilless rifle fire and mortar barrage. Exposing himself to the intense enemy fire, Captain Hill directed his battery in counter battery fire and rendered first aid to the wounded, carrying several of them to safety. Captain Hill further risked his life during lulls in the battle by making crater analyses. Captain Hill’s courageous actions, outstanding, superb leadership and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Captain Hill distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Battery Commander of Battery B, 4th Battalion, 42d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 10 January 1969. On that date, Captain HillÕs battery was supporting an infantry unit during their construction of a new firebase in the Central Highlands. On the cited date, the new firebase received incoming enemy fire. Captain Hill and his First Sergeant moved the only artillery piece that was operating in the firebase and returned the fire. Despite the proximity of the incoming rounds, Captain Hill continually fired on the enemy until their fire was silenced. Captain Hill’s brave actions, his outstanding performance and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
