The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Harlan Frederick Fricke, II (ASN: OF-104737), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Fricke distinguished himself by heroic actions on 20 April 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in the Republic of Vietnam. When the company came into contact with a well-entrenched enemy force, Captain Fricke immediately began maneuvering his men into position. He exposed himself to intense enemy fire and received fragmentation wounds from hostile grenades. Ignoring his wounds, he single-handedly attacked an enemy bunker with complete disregard for his own safety. When he reached the bunker, he threw hand grenades into the position killing two of the enemy. His valorous actions were responsible for the success of the mission and the defeat of the enemy force. Captain Fricke’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
