(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) John Michael Howell, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Howell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, as Special Forces Advisor to a platoon of Army of the Republic of Vietnam soldiers, in action against the enemy in 1968. While on patrol, Captain Howell’s platoon came under intensive fire from the Viet Cong. He exposed himself to the enemy fire in order to direct fire upon the Viet Cong positions. Although wounded, he continued to command the fire fight and call in air strikes on the attackers’ positions. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Howell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
