(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Joseph Benjamin Anderson, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Anderson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of an Infantry Company of the 2d Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy in Cambodia, in 1970. A squad was sent out on a search and clear mission and was ambushed by a large Viet Cong force. Captain Anderson led his company to their relief in an action that resulted in a 3 day battle, overrunning the enemy and finding one of the largest caches of enemy weapons and supplies discovered during the war. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Anderson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
