Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 13792 (November 4, 1969)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Francis Joseph Probst, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Probst distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 12 August 1969, while serving with Company D, 5th Battalion (Airmobile), 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in the Republic of Vietnam. When a friendly unit became engaged with an enemy force, Captain Probst’s company was sent to aid them. Captain Probst completely disregarded his personal safety by moving under intense fire to organize his men in a manner which could bring most effective fire on the hostiles. Time and time again he moved among his men, braving the deadly fire, to give hand and arms signals and direct their fire. As a result of his professional leadership, the enemy force was soundly defeated and no friendly casualties were takin in his company. Captain Probst’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
