The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Robert Maclay Frey (ASN: O)F-104736), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. On 26 March 1968, Captain Frey distinguished himself while serving as the Batter Commander of Battery C, 6th Battalion, 29th Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. In the early morning hours on this date, the forward fire support base came under an intense heavy weapons and mortar attack. This was followed by a concentrated ground attack that breached the west side of the defensive perimeter. Disregarding his personal safety, Captain Frey moved to a position from which he could control the direct fire of his howitzers. Throughout the siege of the mortar, rocket, grenade, and automatic weapons fire, Captain Frey stood his ground and inspired his men to deliver deadly artillery fire into the ranks of the enemy. Although thrown to the ground numerous times from the concussion of exploding enemy rounds, Captain Frey was instrumental in dragging several wounded men to safety. As the battle ranged on, Captain Frey realized that one of his howitzers had been captured by the enemy. Taking immediate action, he laid an adjacent howitzer for direct fire into one position of the captured howitzer. Delivering the maximum rate of devastating anti-personnel artillery rounds into the enemy location, Captain Frey was primarily responsible for eliminating the enemy on the howitzer and breaking the attack of those who were following. Captain Frey’s heroic actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
