The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Harry Nolan Joyner, III (ASN: OF-104817), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Joyner distinguished himself by heroic actions on 17 January 1968, while Commanding Officer of Company D, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance-in-force operation near Katum, Republic of Vietnam. When Company C came under heavy enemy fire, Captain Joyner was instructed to move his company forward to provide reinforcement for the beleaguered unit. Despite intense and concentrated sniper fire which restricted movement, Captain Joyner moved to his forward positions and, with complete disregard for his own safety, personally rallied his men and led them forward to provide Company C with much needed support. Throughout the ensuing rout of the enemy, he personally directed their retaliatory fire of his men while repeatedly exposing himself to the hostile fire. Upon returning to the base camp, his company was again engaged by heavy automatic weapons and Rocket Propelled Grenade rocket fire. Captain Joyner again moved forward to his heavily engaged lead element and directed the emplacement of defensive fire while again repeatedly exposing himself to intense enemy fire. His valorous actions and outstanding leadership contributed immeasurably to the successful defat of the enemy force. Captain Joyner’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
