Headquarters, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), General Orders No. 808 (February 3, 1968)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) David Carlisle Wade, III (ASN: OF-101760), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Wade distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 24 October 1967 while serving as Commanding Officer of Company D, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and destroy mission near Dong-Tri, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under intense hostile fire and sustained several casualties, Captain Wade exposed himself to the enemy fire as he moved forward to organize the embattled elements and direct their base of fire against the hostile force. Disregarding his own safety, he then maneuvered his men in an attempt top out flank the enemy positions, and assisted in bringing several wounded comrades to a secure location. Despite the hostile fire concentrated on his position, Captain Wade called in and skillfully adjusted artillery fire on the enemy fortifications, forcing the hostile soldiers to break contact. Captain Wade’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
