The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Watson Garrard Caudill, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Caudill distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company B, 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 November 1967. While on a night defensive mission, Captain Caudill coordinated his unit’s fire with that of armored personnel carriers and tanks. He refused to seek cover, even though he was constantly exposed to flying shrapnel and debris under heavy enemy attack. He continuously moved about the battle area, treating the wounded and supervising evacuation operations while directing fire on the enemy. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Caudill, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
