The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) William Timothy DiNeno (ASN: OF-101413), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain DiNeno distinguished himself by heroic actions on 21 March 1967, while serving as the Battalion Communications Officer with the 2d Battalion, 77th Artillery Regiment, 3d Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, on a combat operation in the Republic of Vietnam. During the early morning hours a Viet Cong force of regimental size attacked the battalion area with mortars, rockets, and numerous small arms including automatic weapons. Although continuously exposed to hostile fire, Captain DiNeno continued his mission of leading the battalion reaction force to recover a machine gun position which had been overrun. Upon arrival at the machine gun position, the machine gun was found to be inoperative. Captain DiNeno then directed the reaction force to fall back to form a final defensive perimeter, and was wounded in this action. In the process of withdrawing he found an American soldier badly wounded and carried the man to the evacuation point. Through his courage and outstanding leadership, Captain DiNeno contributed immeasurably to the defeat of the Viet Cong force. Captain DiNeno’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
