(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Michael Winston Kilroy, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Kilroy distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving with Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, as Assistant Battalion Advisor to the 4th Battalion, 2d Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam, in action against the enemy while on duty at the Gio Linh outpost in Quang Tri Province, on 19 May 1966. When his battalion was attacked at 2:30 a.m. on 19 May, Captain Kilroy immediately contacted higher headquarters requesting air support. Alter about ten minutes, during a lull in the enemy mortar fire, Captain Kilroy left his bunker to consult with the battalion commander. Almost immediately, the Viet Cong renewed the mortar attack, and he was mortally wounded by fragments from one of the exploding mortar shells. Captain Kilroy’s gallant and timely action in requesting a flare ship served to prevent the enemy from destroying the outpost. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Kilroy, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
