The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Jack Spaulding Chase (ASN: 0-98632), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Chase distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 2 and 3 February 1968, while serving as Senior Advisor, 3d Squadron, 7th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. On 2 February 1968, the Squadron was on a clearing operation inside the Citadel of Hue, when the paratroopers were pinned down by enemy fire. Urging his counterpart to attack immediately, Captain Chase exposed himself to intense hostile fire to place fire on the North Vietnamese Army. Though wounded in the leg, Captain Chase refused medical evacuation and pressed for another attack. Again he voluntarily exposed himself to hostile fire to engage the enemy, allowing the paratroopers to cross 100 meters of open terrain and seize their objective. The following day when another assault was launched, Captain Chase again encouraged his Vietnamese comrades to press the attack, and on more than one occasion, used his individual weapon to repel enemy sappers attacking his vehicle. Inspired by Captain Chase’s professional example and soldierly conduct under fire, the Vietnamese were able to rid a large section of the Citadel of North Vietnamese Army soldiers and inflict heavy casualties on them. Captain Chase’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
