The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Paul Douglas Stanley, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Stanley distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 4th Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 199th Infantry Brigade (Light) (Separate), in action against the enemy on 4 September 1967. On this date, Captain Stanley was flying a helicopter reconnaissance mission in the area in which elements of his unit were conducting a search and destroy operation, when a bunker containing several Viet Cong was discovered. Quickly grasping the situation, Captain Stanley directed that a gunship be used to transport a squad across the river to the insurgents’ location. Surprised by the sudden arrival of the friendly force and its rapid advance, the Viet Cong began to retreat, firing as they moved. When the squad halted to assist a seriously wounded member, the Viet Cong took advantage of the pause to return to the bunker and deliver suppressive fire on the friendly force. Observing the battle from his helicopter, Captain Stanley directed that his aircraft be landed. Courageously disregarding t he enemy fire, he leaped from the craft and assisted in placing the wounded soldier in the helicopter for evacuation. After he had reorganized the squad he led an attack on the enemy bunker, completely exposing himself as he fired his weapon and threw hand grenades. His aggressive charge toward the Viet Cong caused them to panic and retreat. Captain Stanley’s aggressive action and personal bravery served as an example for his men to emulate, inspiring them to a greater effort. Captain Stanley’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
