The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Richard Howard Goldsmith, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Goldsmith distinguished himself by heroic actions on 7 September 1969, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 2d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance operation, elements of Company C came in contact with a large enemy force. Immediately, Captain Goldsmith organized his men and directed their fire on the hostile positions. As the battle progressed, Captain Goldsmith, with complete disregard for his own safety, exposed himself to the hail of fire as he led his men in an assault of the enemy emplacements. Upon nearing the enemy bunkers, Captain Goldsmith aided in destroying one of the machine gun emplacements. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the hostile force. Captain Goldsmith’s braver, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
