The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Philip Eugene Pons, Jr. (ASN: 0-96131), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Pons distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 14 October 1967, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company B, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a combat mission in the Que Son Valley, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under intense hostile fire and sustained several casualties, Captain Pons exposed himself to the enemy fire as he moved his command group to the forward fighting positions to better observe the tactical situation. Disregarding his own safety, he then skillfully called in and adjusted artillery fire to within 25 meters of his own position. As the enemy force began to withdraw, Captain Pons exposed himself to the hostile sniper fire as he moved forward to direct and assist in the prompt administration of first aid to the injured personnel. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
