The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Malcolm Jones Howard, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Howard distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company B, 2d Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action on 19 May 1966 during a search and destroy mission in the Boi Loi Woods, Republic of Vietnam. As his company was moving through the dense jungle, they received intense Viet Cong fire from well-fortified positions, sustaining numerous casualties. Captain Howard immediately moved forward to advise his platoon leader and supervise the deployment of two platoons. Under his outstanding leadership, the lead elements of his company charged the Viet Cong bunkers, killing the insurgents and destroying their positions. Although he was slightly wounde during the battle, he conrtinued his mission until the company had taken its objective, evacuated the wounded, and moved back to the base area. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Howard, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
