(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Winston Blanton Clark, Jr., United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Clark distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, and subsequently with the 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 1964 to 1967. Captain Clark moved through a hail of insurgent fire to reach the side of the battalion commander. Upon discovering the rest of the command group was wounded, Captain Clark assumed the position of battalion operations officer and functioned for the entire staff during a night of intermittent contact. The following day, Captain Clark was severely wounded during an attack on the insurgents’ fortified position. Though injured during the first exchange of fire, he refused to be evacuated. Captain Clark’s devotion to duty and acts of courage are credited with turning the tide of battle. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Clark, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
