The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Dennis Don Flint (ASN: 0-95912), United States Army, for gallantry In action while serving with Military Assistance Command, Vietnam. First Lieutenant Flint distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 27 May 1965, while serving as Advisor to a friendly unit on a combat operation in the Republic of Vietnam. As the unit assaulted an enemy position, it came under intense hostile fire. First Lieutenant Flint, with complete disregard for his own personal safety, positioned himself on top of a rice paddy dike to direct airstrikes on the enemy positions, enabling the unit to advance to within seventy-five meters of the enemy. When the assaulting elements were pinned down, First Lieutenant Flint moved to another exposed position and directed further armed helicopter strikes. Again his courageous action permitted the friendly unit to attack the Viet Cong. He then moved across open terrain under enemy fire to guide the soldiers into effective firing positions. Although First Lieutenant Flint was wounded he continued to assist and advise the men of the unit as they maintained pressure on the insurgents which allowed an adjacent friendly force to withdraw. First Lieutenant Flint’s conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
