The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Donald Neil Babb (ASN: 0-95774), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Babb distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 17 September 1968, while serving as Battery Commander of Battery A, 2d Battalion, 32d Artillery Regiment, 23d Artillery Group, at Camp Saint Barbara. Throughout the day his battery was repeatedly subjected to Viet Cong mortar, small arms, and automatic weapons fire. The enemy had also mined and ambushed the convoy’s trying to re-supply the camp, making it necessary to re-supply by air. During each attack, Captain Babb exposed himself to heavy fire to assist in the evacuation of wounded and to move among the fighting positions to check the safety of his other men. Captain Babb’s actions inspired his troops to such a high degree that their counterfire was uninterrupted. While supervising the aerial supply of one of his gun emplacements he was seriously wounded and evacuated. Captain Babb’s gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
