The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Armor) Elliott Guthrie Fishburne, III, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Fishburne distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 3d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy at First Support Base Burt in Tay Ninh Province, South Vietnam, on 2 January 1968. When enemy troops attacked his company’s position near the Cambodian border, Captain Fishburne lost contact with two of his platoons. He called for artillery fire directly across his perimeter and moved to the artillery position to personally direct the shelling. Then he moved across the area to link up with battalion reconnaissance soldiers and led them to a position where they could reinforce his platoon. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Fishburne, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
