Ronald Skarupa graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, Class of 1962. He retired in 1983 as a U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel.

    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Field Artillery) Ronald Andrew Skarupa, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Major Skarupa distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with Advisory Team 70, during the period 20 May 1972 to 30 June 1972, while serving as Staff Advisor to the 5th Infantry Division, and Acting Senior Advisor to the 7th Infantry Regiment, 5th Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam. Throughout this period, Major Skarupa participated in the successful battle for the key city of An Loc against major enemy forces which included armor and sophisticated anti-aircraft systems. On 20 May 1972. Major Skarupa voluntarily entered the severely constricted defensive perimeter by helicopter in the face of known antiaircraft defenses and amid the daily heavy indirect fire which was raining on the city. During this timed, with high efficiency and calm demeanor, he directed and coordinated tactical air strikes, helicopter operations, and aerial re-supply missions in support of critical ground operations. Major Skarupa’s cool effectiveness served as an inspiration to both U.S. and Army of the Republic of Vietnam officers and men. On several occasions, in disregard of his personal safety, Major Skarupa volunteered to make personal reconnaissance expeditions and assist in ground control of U.S. and VNAF heliborne operations. The information he obtained, and the personal control which he exercised in the face of enemy artillery and rocket fire on the helicopter landing zones reflected his technical competence and physical courage. Major Skarupa’s conspicuous gallantry In action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
