(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Christopher Hendrik Keuker, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Keuker distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company A, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 14 March 1967. After the enemy launched a heavy mortar barrage on a fire support base, Captain Keuker’s company was sent out to find the enemy. They were engaged by a battalion-size enemy element which brought them under heavy sniper, relentless mortar shelling, and human wave attacks. Casualties were heavy, particularly in the lead platoon, and Captain Keuker rushed forward through intense fire to provide cover for his trapped soldiers. Hit by sniper fire, he continued to fight ferociously with the heavy contact lasting throughout the day and night. He was found the following morning, unconscious and severely wounded in the head, arms, and legs and surrounded by enemy dead. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Keuker, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
