Captain Maio distinguished himself by actions on 17 January 1968, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 2d Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, on a combat operation in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a search and destroy operation the lead platoon was engaged by a well-fortified enemy force. Captain Maio unhesitatingly moved to the forward elements exposing himself to heavy enemy fire while organizing and directing his men’s return fire. Unable to maneuver his company in any direction because of the heavy enemy fire and attacks from all sides, he organized a tight perimeter line and continued to repel the fierce enemy attacks. He then directed air strikes against he enemy position, bringing napalm to within 30 meters of his elements. Although wounded by flying shrapnel, he continued to lead his men until the enemy withdrew. Due to Captain Maio’s valorous actions and outstanding leadership the mission was successfully completed and the enemy force defeated. Captain Maio’s personal bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
