The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain George Larry Shamblee, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Shamblee distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as an Electronic Warfare Officer of an F-105 Fighter Airplane of the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, SEVENTH Air Force, Korat Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action against the enemy in 1967. Captain Shamblee displayed courage and determination by deliberately entering North Vietnam in a lone F-105 aircraft to provide protection for a large F-105 strike force. Persevering in the face of danger and death, this officer occupied all MiG activity, allowing the strike force to deliver its ordnance successfully, and then was forced to bail out of his crippled aircraft due to damage from the MiG attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Shamblee, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
