The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) George Dennis Lenhart (ASN: 0-93803), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Lenhart distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 15 November 1967, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and destroy mission near Huong Loc, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became pinned down by intense hostile fire and sustained casualties, Captain Lenhart exposed himself to the enemy fire as he moved forward to organize and position his men. Disregarding his own safety, he then assisted in moving several wounded soldiers to a medical evacuation helicopter. While moving through the open area, Captain Lenhart located the well concealed enemy positions and called in close artillery fire on them. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
