The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Joseph Anthony Czuberki, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Czuberki distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Company B, 2d Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment, 196th Infantry Brigade (Light) (Separate), in action against the enemy during Operation ATTLEBORO in War Zone C about 60 miles northwest of Saigon, South Vietnam, on 3 November 1966. Captain Czuberki’s company encountered a heavily fortified Viet Cong unit and was pinned down by intense fire. Captain Czuberki, with his lead platoon badly hurt, brought up his remaining two platoons and directed their fire. After withdrawing his lead platoon, he called in helicopters to evacuate the wounded and assisted in their extraction. The following day Captain Czuberki led his company to the aid of a battalion that was experiencing Viet Cong “human wave” attacks. He positioned his men in the weakened defensive area and was instrumental in beating off the heavy enemy assaults. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Czuberki, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
