The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) William Tripp McNamara, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Major McNamara distinguished himself by heroic actions on 19 June 1969, while serving as Aerial Operations Officer with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. While established at Fire Support Base WASHINGTON, elements of the 22d Infantry Regiment came under intense enemy rocket and mortar fire, which was followed by a massive ground assault. Immediately, Major McNamara moved to the tactical Operations Center in order to direct artillery fire, gunship fire, and airstrikes on the hostile positions. After calling in the supporting fire, Major McNamara, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved from the Tactical Operations Center to a vantage point to effectively adjust the supporting fire on the enemy forces. After the battle subsided, Major McNamara flew with his pilot on a visual reconnaissance mission over the battle area. When Major McNamara spotted an enemy soldier, who was attempting to evade the friendly ground forces, he placed effective fire on the aggressor. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the thwarting of the enemy force. Major McNamara’s bravery, aggressiveness, and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 25th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
