The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting a Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster in lieu of a Second Award of the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) William Irvine Scudder, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Scudder distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 7 January 1968, while serving as the Executive Officer of the 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a combat mission in the Que Son Valley, Republic of Vietnam. When three companies from his battalion were encircled by a large enemy force, Major Scudder organized and directed a breakout maneuver allowing the companies to return to the battalion base camp. As two platoons were unable to break contact, Major Scudder returned to the battle site and repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire as he personally led an assault against the hostile emplacements. His courageous action inflicted numerous casualties on the hostile force and contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit’s mission. Major Scudder’s gallant action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) William Irvine Scudder, United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Scudder distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 21 August 1967, while serving as Commanding Officer of Company C, 2d Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), during a search and destroy operation near Phu My, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit came under hostile fire from a North Vietnamese Army force, Captain Scudder established a base of fire, and began maneuvering his unit against the enemy positions. As his assaulting force came within a few meters of the hostile bunkers and became pinned down, he directed heavy fire on the hostile positions. Receiving several casualties and unable to move forward, Captain Scudder began withdrawing his men. Disregarding his own safety, he moved forward through an area of intense enemy fire to evacuate his wounded comrades. On one occasion, he engaged an enemy bunker at close range to cover the evacuation of a wounded soldier. Captain Scudder’s gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
