(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Victor Theodore Letonoff, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Letonoff distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of Troop C, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 25 and 26 August 1966. Captain Letonoff assumed command of a unit whose leadership had been lost following 18 hours of continuous combat. He rallied the disorganized forces, motivated them to continue the assault, assisted the wounded and personally carried some of the wounded through an open battlefield to an evacuation site. Tank units thereafter went on to rout enemy forces without losing a single vehicle. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Letonoff, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
