(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major (Infantry) Lawrence Michael Malone (ASN: O-83349), United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Malone distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Operations Officer of the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Division (Airborne), 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy in Quang Nam Province, Vietnam, on 7 January 1968. Major Malone continued to direct suppressive fire against communist positions while leaning out of a helicopter, up until the time his helicopter crashed and he was fatally wounded. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Malone, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
