(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Bradley Jerome Johnson, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Johnson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as a Helicopter Pilot and as Commanding Officer of Company C, 229th Aviation Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy in near the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam, on 13 July 1968. On that date, Major Johnson was flying with two other helicopters to insert a long range reconnaissance patrol. While two of his helicopters flew diversionary patterns to confuse the enemy on the insertion location, Major Johnson landed in another area to debark the patrol. He and his comrades then remained on station in the area for thirty minutes to ensure that the patrol was not discovered. During this period the patrol encountered a North Vietnamese brigade, and were surrounded by the numerically superior enemy force. Forced to escape and evade, Major Johnson flew in to make an emergency extraction. Unable to land amid the fusillade of enemy fire, he hovered to hoist the patrol into his helicopter, while a stream of enemy tracers erupted around his aircraft. He called for gunship support and remained in his hover until all members of the patrol were recovered, and then returned to his base with only three minutes of fuel remaining. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Johnson, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
