Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Thomas Philip Garigan, United States Army, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Garigan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, in action against the enemy on 11 December 1964. During vigorous front assault by the 3d Battalion, 14th Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Vietnam, engaged in a clearing operation, enemy automatic weapons fire became so intense that the attack was halted. Subsequently the insurgents counterattacked the battalion’s flank. The counterattack was repulsed by the reserve company and headquarters element of which Captain Garigan was a part. With ammunition running low, the frontal elements began a disorganized withdrawal. Captain Garigan, without regard for his personal safety, exposed himself to intense automatic weapons fire as he went to the aid of the 3d Battalion Commander. The withdrawal was halted and the insurgents were thrown back. A second time in the same action, Captain Garigan averted panic and retreat. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Garigan, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
