The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry) Anthony Michael Jezior (ASN: 0-73732), United States Army, for gallantry in action against a hostile force while serving with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in 25 October 1966. On this date, Major Jezior’s unit was participating in a search and destroy operation near Phuoc Vinh when it became heavily engaged with a well-fortified Viet Cong battalion. Throughout the ensuing battle, Major Jezior constantly placed himself in hazardous positions in order to facilitate maximum control of his battalion’s elements. Although exposed to intense hostile fire, he executed his responsibilities with exceptional self confidence, fortitude, and initiative. Without regard for his personal safety, Major Jezior moved throughout the battle area to insure that timely information was available for a continuous estimate of the situation, often stopping to encourage leaders and soldiers as well as to assist in evacuating the wounded. Major Jezior courageously performed all these tasks while still recovering from a wound received in an earlier action. Major Jezior’s unquestionable valor in close combat against a hostile force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
