Lieutenant Colonel Ordway distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Commanding Officer of the 2d Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile), in action against the enemy in 1968 and 1969. Operating north of Tay Ninh, Republic of Vietnam, Lieutenant Colonel Ordway was instrumental in halting the infiltration of the North Vietnamese Army forces from Cambodia and stopping a major attack on Landing Zone JAMIE.
