(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Robert Louis Russell, United States Air Force, for gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Major Russell distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions while serving as Pilot of an A-1 Skyraider Search and Rescue Aircraft of the 602d Fighter Squadron (Commando), 64th Tactical Group, THIRTEENTH Air Force, Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, in action against the enemy in March 1967. Working closely with Jolly Green Giant Rescue Helicopters, Major Russel participated in the recovery of a downed American pilot in North Vietnam. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Russell, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
